Música independente global na Music Alliance Pact de Maio

O Meio Desligado é o representante exclusivo do Brasil no Music Alliance Pact, projeto global que envolve cerca de 40 blogs especializados em música, de diferentes países, que mensalmente realiza uma coletânea com bandas independentes/alternativas desses países. Todo dia 15 é publicada a coletânea com uma música escolhida pelo representante de seu respectivo país de origem. No Brasil, essa função é exercida pelo Meio Desligado, que neste mês enviou o Faroff.  BRAZIL: Meio Desligado FAROFF - Brazilian Star Wars
Can you imagine the Star Wars troopers having fun in a slum in Rio de Janeiro, listening to funk carioca in the summer and surrounded by girls? This is not a new track, but Brazilian Star Wars shows one of the best moments of DJ FAROFF, the name used by Leo Bursztyn, PHD in economics and former guitarist of Brazilian band Móveis Coloniais de Acaju. 

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie Paula y Los Besos - Bailar 

Paula y Los Besos is the new musical adventure of singer, songwriter and poet Paula Trama. The band just released eight songs in the form of two EPs that range from acoustic-punk upbeat tunes to tender folk ballads. Bailar is a cover of T. Rex's Cosmic Dancer, with Spanish lyrics adapted by Paula herself. You can hear and download both EPs from their Bandcamp page. 

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They? Swimming - Triplebrie 

Adelaide's Swimming are sisters Katie and Angie Schilling and friend Sam Reynolds. Triplebrie is the first single from their new record Yes, Tonight. There are plenty of layered vocals and looped sounds on the album, but Swimming's simple outlook on a capella really does its best in an acoustic setting. The trio also sell tea towels as merchandise, so we can't really say anything bad about this band right now. 

AUSTRIA: Walzerkönig Fijuka - Behave (From Now On) 

First a drum machine, then a Billie Jean-style bassline and finally synthscapes that embed the voice of Fijuka's Ankathie singing one of the weirdest declarations of love we have ever heard. Fijuka stands for DIY pop with an art school touch. Watch the music video for some Rhönrad wheel action. 

CANADA: Quick Before It Melts Program - Waiting 

Program's wall of sound is not insurmountable but it's far from an easy climb. It will challenge you to find a familiar foothold (Is it shoegaze? Is it drone-rock? Is it disco or dance?) but ultimately leaves you breathless with its brilliant audacity. It is a mountain you'll climb over and over again, never once following the same sonic route to its summit. 

CHILE: Super 45 Lainus - Montañitas 

Lainus is the solo project of Alfredo Ibarra who, after returning from New Zealand, has devoted himself to writing music and rediscovering his country. The Andes is the source of inspiration for his single Montañitas ("Little Mountains"), a catchy electronic pop breeze that links him telepathically to the new pop wave (Passion Pit, Phoenix), the Chilean psychedelic tradition and the now very trendy world music. It's a taster of his next album, due for release in the second half of the year. 

COLOMBIA: El Parlante Amarillo Lina Patiño - Plena Luz 

With roots in classical singing, Lina Patiño has been experimenting with jazz, ballads, R&B and classical music. Proof of this is the endless number of projects of different genres she has participated in. But now, in her solo guise, her range takes her a step further than usual. We invite you to listen to Plena Luz ("Full Light"), produced by Eblis Alvarez (Meridian Brothers), in which Lina's vocals are confused and intermingled between bambuco and dark experimental pop. 

CUBA: suenacubano.com Adrian Berazaín y Mauricio Figueiral - Por Una Camarera 

This month we cover the association of two young artists: Adrián Berazaín and Mauricio Figueiral. Por Una Camarera ("For A Waitress") is a song in which Cuban rhythms are fused with extraordinary results and will be included in the upcoming releases of both artists separately. Follow these two songwriters closely as they are sure to surprise us with their future output. 

DENMARK: All Scandinavian Lulu Rouge - Grey Heron Man 

Five years on from their awesome debut Bless You, electronica legends Lulu Rouge (aka DJs and producers Buda and T.O.M.) released their second full-length, The Song Is In The Drum, at the end of April. If you're into deep, dark and excellently melancholic dub this is one not to miss. Grey Heron Man, one of three instrumentals, is a MAP exclusive download. 

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: La Casetera Nelson García - La Bomba 

Veteran singer-songwriter Nelson García (formerly known as Nelson Poket) went solo and is now making music under his real name. La Bomba is a rock song with a classic attitude that ticks with new energy and prepares us for his new album release on June 15. 

ECUADOR: Plan Arteria Guanaco - Crónico 

After 15 years on the road, Guanaco, one of the most important independent music icons in Ecuador, presents his most ambitious and mature album, Raíz. The record has 16 versatile tracks that blend hip hop with a wide range of urban and Latin sounds. The lyrics of Crónico provide a deep reflection on the use of drugs. 

ENGLAND: Drowned In Sound Ghosting Season - Time Without Question (alternate version) 

Ghosting Season are a techno-loving duo from northern England. Until recently, their music was a marriage of glacial post-rock and warm late-night electronica as Worriedaboutsatan. Under their new guise, Gavin Miller and Tom Ragsdale are already readying a second LP of brooding bloops that spiral into something you could call evil party music. This track was featured on our DiS community podcast.  

ESTONIA: Rada7.ee Kannabinõid - Karistus 

Kannabinõid are a deafening stoner/doom band from Tallinn. Obviously there are plenty of (Nordic) metal/rock bands but these guys are particularly good. They just received some really good feedback from the international music industry delegates of showcase festival Tallinn Music Week. 

FINLAND: Glue Phenomenal Creature - Perfect Impression 

Phenomenal Creature play (mostly) acoustic folk with an intense bluesy feeling, creating songs that are beautifully arranged and decorated with a myriad of little instruments and harmonies. Perfect Impression is the opener of the band's recently released debut album. 

FRANCE: Yet You're Fired FAUVE - Kané 

FAUVE appeared from nowhere in the French music scene at the end of 2011, and after only a few months and four songs, offered for free, they became what many French critics called "the voice of our generation". With beautifully crafted instrumentals, marvellous choirs and words that touch and speak to our feelings and soul directly - putting a finger on our many life problems and crises - they deserve to be known all over the world, even if only using spoken word in Molière's language. Their first EP, Blizzard, is released on May 20. 

GERMANY: Coltran HELMUT - The Tribe 

Voice, guitar, loops. More and more artists focus on these instruments to make versatile songs to dream, cry or dance to. HELMUT has the talent to build up a song layer by layer, motif by motif, and then slowly start to variate and deconstruct everything. The live experience of this guy is simply amazing.

ARGENTINA: Zonaindie 

Plástico - Cinicos 

For the 50th edition of MAP we have chosen a brand new band from a western suburb of Buenos Aires. Plástico's sound is a mixture of trip-rock with some electronic and acoustic elements that caught the attention of famous producer Raphael Gordon (The Strokes). Together they recorded a couple of tracks. One is Subir Al Tren, which was used on their first video. The other is Cinicos, previously unreleased, which is a great preview of their upcoming debut album. 

AUSTRALIA: Who The Bloody Hell Are They? 

Courtney Barnett - History Eraser 

It's hard to pin down what exactly defines that distinct 'Australian' sound. For all the ringing guitar riffs and choruses sung in unison etched into our collective memory, there's something about Australian music that still flails an antipodean flag. We isolate ourselves on the coast; we recycle stories about strangers, lovers and backyard melancholia; we make poetry championing the suburbs. Melbourne singer Courtney Barnett is certainly at home on her track History Eraser. A colloquial ode to The Triffids, ticket inspectors and nights with good company, this track is a perfect summary of the earnest freewheelin' and rambling wit that makes music from this end of the world just so great. 

AUSTRIA: Walzerkönig 

Mauracher - Outer Space Dancer 

Outer Space Dancer is the first single from the new, fourth Mauracher album Super Seven, out now on Fabrique Records. For this album, Tyrolean electronic musician Hubert Mauracher has teamed up with singer Sonia Sawoff (of Sawoff Shotgun). Together, they create synth-filled dream-pop with ethereal lyrics such as, "When I close my eyes, I stop thinking". 

BRASIL: Meio Desligado 

Sexy Fi - Pequeno Dicionário Das Ruas 

From our capital Brasília comes Sexy Fi, a band that knows how to make a good first impression. Their debut album was produced by John McEntire (Tortoise) and received great reviews in Brazilian alternative blogs. "Pequeno Dicionário Das Ruas" is the song that opens the album and sees them experiment with indie-rock, resulting in a tropical, alternative sound. 

CANADA: Quick Before It Melts 

Some Minor Noise - Tape Experiments 

Toronto duo Some Minor Noise's Tape Experiment gets its name from the fact that every sound used, except the kick, snare and vocal, was recorded through a 13-year-old cassette deck, an Optimus CTR-117 (Google it), to a very worn cassette tape that's at least 10 years old. The end result has a richness and humanity that's very often missing from electro-pop, and a perfect example of Some Minor Noise's refreshing take on a familiar genre. 

CHILE: Super 45 

Nader Cabezas - Doble En El Espejo 

Synthesizer layers, guitars with heavy feedback and a lo-fi sound are the attributes of duo Nader Cabezas. On their new album, El Hijo Del Mounstruo, released through LeRockPsicophonique, their music goes deeper into this direction, resulting in dense and obscure rock but without losing focus on what matters - the songs. Doble En El Espejo is taken from this album. 

CHINA: Wooozy 

Chui Wan - Berber 

Chui Wan is a four-piece experimental psychedelic rock band from Beijing. Their lush arrangements of guitar, keyboard, viola, other assorted instruments and random sound samples often eschew reliable melodies and vocal harmonies in favor of occasional passages of minimal drone or maximal sonic layerings. They will have their debut release tour with Brooklyn-based band Psychic Ills in China this month.

COLOMBIA: El Parlante Amarillo
Alfonso Espriella - Cielo Adentro
Alfonso Espriella is a tireless and dedicated musician who has been making alternative rock for more than 10 years. Joel Hamilton produced his most recent EP, Anima, from which Cielo Adentro ("Heaven Inside") is taken. It evokes marked influences of acts such as Caifanes from Mexico or Robi Draco Rosa from Puerto Rico, with deep lyrics and an emotive sound.

DENMARK: All Scandinavian
The Savage Rose - Soldier On The Run
On Love And Freedom, The Savage Rose's 21st album since their eponymous debut in 1968, the legendary rock outfit stage love and politics on an amazing backdrop of hauntingly soulful rock - just as they did when they were a young band - taken to magical heights by frontwoman Annisette's breathtaking vocal and a performance I could never do justice to in words. Because it's anniversary time on MAP, here's a mindbogglingly exclusive download of Soldier On The Run.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: La Casetera
Janio Lora - Mi Nueva Edad
For this MAP special edition, singer-songwriter and dreamer Janio Lora has recorded a new demo. Produced by Argentinian composer Pablo Dacal, Mi Nueva Edad blends elegant tango melodies with poignant lyrics as a preview of what to expect from Janio's upcoming album.

ECUADOR: Plan Arteria
Da Pawn - Casi Siempre
A band's music lasts over time when its songs become part of a generation's culture. Da Pawn, one of the revelations of this year, reworks a popular single by the important electronic indie-pop band Can Can into a beautiful folk-rock song. This track is taken from the free download album Malas Influencias (Remixes y Reversiones), which celebrates the 10th anniversary of Can Can.

Dan Croll - From Nowhere (Ben Gomori's Staring You In The Eye Remix)
Dan Croll is a Liverpool Institute For Performing Arts graduate who doesn't like The Beatles, a folkie who's gone electronic, and a bespectacled boffin who is no softie - in fact, he could have played rugby for England until an accident waylaid his plans. Instead he's the new golden boy of indie Afro-tinged synth'n'b. From Nowhere is his debut single, a catchy slice of electro-pop with a breezy vocal about losing control and a hook designed to lodge in your skull.

FINLAND: Glue
Statues Made Of Matchsticks - If I Didn't Comb My Hair
Folk trio Statues Made Of Matchsticks joins the 50th MAP post celebration with an exclusive song recorded at their rehearsal room this month. If I Didn't Comb My Hair features the band's signature laid-back acoustic sounds and a sweet pop melody to create a perfect sunset-on-front-porch kind of song.

FRANCE: Yet You're Fired
Colours In The Street - Paper Child
Colours In The Street's members are still in high school but have acquired a big following with only two years behind them thanks to delightful pop songs with strong English influences and a very thorough sense of composition. Having won several contests with only the few songs from their first EP, Euphory, they decided to push further and have been recording a second EP, Paper Child, due out on December 15, from which this song is taken. Watch them playing an acoustic set in a bathroom here. 

GERMANY: Coltran
Touchy Mob - Seven Hills (Afternoon Touchymap version)
I'm very proud to present an exclusive recording by my favourite German artist Ludwig Plath aka Touchy Mob, who was first featured on MAP in February 2011. He has reworked his song Seven Hills with guitar, bass and rattle - resulting in something he calls 'fuzzybuzzy'. I love his velvet voice and how his attention to detail and songwriting skills make my hair stand on end.

Sexy Fi - Nunca te vi de boa (2012)

"Moloque doido", "mais um comédia vai rodar" e um refrão com "boto fé". Assim começa o primeiro álbum da brasiliense Sexy Fi, Nunca te vi de boa. Frases e termos presentes no cotidiano mas que dificilmente imaginaríamos em canções de indie rock. O estranhamento, apesar da familiaridade com os elementos principais que compõem o trabalho da banda, é recorrente também na sonoridade da Sexy Fi. Rock experimental diluído entre referências e influências musicais como bossa nova, indie e pós-rock, remetendo, às vezes em uma mesma música, a grupos aparentemente distantes como Tortoise, Dirty Projectors e Tool (em "Feeling Asa Sul, Looking Asa Norte" e "Brasília Graffiti").

Apesar de ser um grupo novo, a base do Sexy Fi é a Nancy, banda que teve relativa divulgação no meio alternativo na década passada e chegou a ser destaque no Meio Desligado também. Após uma interrupção nas atividades, a banda voltou com nova identidade - resultado de mudança de integrantes e sonoridade. 

Na época da Nancy, a vocalista Camila Zamith morava na Inglaterra e a maior parte do processo de composição acontecia pela internet. Agora, vivendo em São Paulo enquanto o restante da banda permanece em Brasília, ao menos a circulação do Sexy Fi deve ser potencializada. O fato de ter morado no exterior deve ter contribuído para que as letras em português (alternando com o inglês em alguns momentos) destoem do que geralmente se ouve, com palavras e termos inusitados ao longo das músicas.

A surpreendente estreia da banda foi gravada e mixada por John McEntire, do Tortoise, e contou com a ajuda de Munha, do Satanique Samba Trio, na concepção artística. Quase um álbum conceitual sobre a vida em Brasília, Nunca te vi de boa tem a maioria dos nomes das músicas relacionadas à cidade ("Roriz 2010", "Plano: pilotis", "Feeling Asa Sul, Looking Asa Norte" e "Brasília Graffiti"). Quem dera se Brasília fosse uma cidade tão bonita e singela como na versão do Sexy Fi...

Festival Porão do Rock 2012: cobertura

O Porão do Rock deve ser o maior festival de heavy metal do Brasil, falta apenas que se assuma como tal. Essa foi uma das principais impressões após conferir de perto a 15ª edição do festival, realizada nos dias 7 e 8 de Setembro no Complexo do Ginásio Nilson Nelson (compreendido pelo ginásio em si e uma grande área ao seu redor), em Brasília. O palco dedicado às bandas mais pesadas, montado no ginásio, esteve lotado a maior parte do tempo e abrigou bandas como a norte-americana Trivium, Sepultura, Almah e D.F.C. Na parte externa, dois palcos montados lado-a-lado receberam o restante da programação, com destaque para os estrangeiros Kyuss Lives!, Red Fang e Gaz Coombes.

Palco dedicado às bandas mais pesadas do festival, montado dentro do Ginásio Nilson Nelson

O Porão é um clássico "festival de roqueiro", daqueles em que 90% do público vai de camisa preta estampando nomes de bandas de heavy metal ou classic rock. A sintonia entre o público e as bandas de sonoridade mais extrema no festival é enorme, mesmo quando não justificada pela qualidade artística dos shows (incrível perceber a melhoria na qualidade do som durante o show dos estrangeiros do Trivium, enquanto nas apresentações das bandas locais, no mesmo espaço, a massa ruidosa tomava conta do ginásio - resultado de músicos ruins ou equipe técnica despreparada). Esse lado headbanger do festival é um dos seus pontos fortes: reúne de forma democrática e com boa estrutura bandas expressivas do cenário heavy metal / hardcore e as apresenta de forma democrática ao público brasiliense. 

Por outro lado, ao tentar diversificar sua programação, o festival acaba por se perder sem definir uma linha estética. O indie folk do Vanguart e o inglês Gaz Coombes (vocalista do Supergrass) soavam deslocados e bandas locais risíveis se apresentaram em horários de destaque na programação. Nos palcos externos, fugindo de shows terríveis como o de Daniel Belleza & Os Corações em Fúria, Darshan e Trampa, foi possível se surpreender com o rockabilly performático da banda local Os Dinamites e assistir aos animados shows de Autoramas com BNegão e dos Raimundos, que, acredite, fez um grande show ao tocar o álbum Lavô tá novo integralmente. Mesmo com boa parte do público indo embora após o show do Raimundos, quem permaneceu pode ver uma das apresentações mais marcantes do festival, feita pelos americanos do Red Fang. Rock'n'roll pesado e sujo, alternando entre o stoner rock e o heavy metal em show mais intenso do que o Kyuss Lives! (reencarnação do Kyuss, ex-banda de Josh Homme, do Queens of the Stone Age), faria no dia seguinte.

Se você foi (ou é) um daqueles adolescentes que saía com orgulho com suas camisetas do AC/DC e Iron Maiden, usava correntes e All Star e qualquer banda que tivesse distorção já agradava um pouco aos seus ouvidos, o Porão do Rock pode lhe proporcionar excelentes horas de diversão. Se você não estiver nesse grupo, é mais um festival para encontrar com os amigos, beber e se divertir rodeado por clichês.

Festival Sai da rede: o som que vem da web

Logo que tive o primeiro contato com o festival Sai da rede gostei de sua programação e seu mote do "som que vem da web", com artistas cujas origens/atuações possuem forte ligação com a internet. João Brasil, Lucas Santtana, Burro Morto, Isaar, Lulina, Instituto, Letuce, Tiê e Tulipa Ruiz formam um recorte interessante da produção musical brasileira contemporânea que poderá ser conferido ao vivo no Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil de Brasília ao longo do mês de janeiro (os shows começaram no final de semana passado e continuam até o dia 23 de janeiro).

De um ponto de vista pessoal, discordo da seleção de Tiê pelo fato de ser uma artista de uma grande gravadora (Warner) e cuja divulgação do trabalho está muito ligada a isso (ou seja, não se trata de uma artista cuja repercussão do trabalho é típica da era digital) e Lulina, nesse caso, puramente por critérios subjetivos de qualidade artística (resumindo em poucas palavras: acho um saco e superestimada).

Cobertura do festival Porão do Rock 2010

A Alê dos Santos, que já publicou alguns textos aqui no Meio Desligado, está de blog novo e armou uma cobertura coletiva do festival Porão do Rock 2010 lá no My Favorite Way.

Abaixo você confere o que escreveram sobre o show do Mombojó no festival, que também teve shows do Pato Fu, Autoramas, She Wants Revenge, Galinha Preta, Supersuckers e outros.

"... a banda pernambucana Mombojó atacou o público do Porão do Rock com hits certeiros e uma sequência final apenas com canções do disco de estréia que deixou os presentes satisfeitos, felizes e roucos de tanto cantar junto com o incansável vocalista Felipe S. E tem noites onde tudo dá certo. Até uma ausência que poderia comprometer, acrescentou ainda mais a apresentação da banda. O baixista original Samuel não veio a Brasília, “porque está gravando a novela das 8”, como explicou Felipe no palco. Porém, com isso a substituição não poderia ser mais acertada. O conterrâneo Dengue (Nação Zumbi e 3 na Massa), caiu como uma luva e transformou a já competente cozinha da banda ainda mais interessante e cheia de grooves. Resumindo. Som bom, alto e definido, repertório excelente, músicos entrosados, público na mão e ainda o palco ao lado da entrada, tudo contribuiu para uma noite inesquecível e praticamente perfeita".

Festival Porão do Rock 2010

A 13ª edição do festival Porão do Rock acontece hoje, 11 de setembro, em Brasília, a partir das 17h no estacionamento do Ginásio Nilson Nelson (é piada esse nome?). Os ingressos são distribuídos em troca de 1kg de alimentos não perecíveis.

O festival terá 3 palcos e reunirá, ao todo, 33 bandas nacionais e internacionais, com destaque para os norte-americanos do Supersuckers e She Wants Revenge. Entre as bandas nacionais, misturam-se nomes já conhecidos, como Pato Fu, Mombojó e Autoramas, a diversas novas atrações locais ainda desconhecidas do grande público.

Neste ano o Porão do Rock é realizado com verba do Fundo Nacional de Cultura e patrocínio do Subway, Chilli Beans e GTR.

Super Stereo Surf - Antes do baile

Toda cidade que se preze tem ao menos uma banda de surf music. Em Brasília, a mais conhecida é a Super Stereo Surf, quarteto instrumental que nomeia todas as suas músicas a partir de títulos de filmes como "Curtindo a vida adoidado", "Te pego lá fora" e "Corra Lola Corra". E é aí, no principal diferencial da banda, que está seu maior risco: ao utilizar o cinema como fonte de inspiração para nomear suas músicas a banda avança em território muitas vezes já preenchido pelas relações do ouvinte com os filmes citados. Quando você se depara com uma música chamada "Curtindo a vida adoidado", já tem uma imagem mental do que esperar e, dependendo de seu grau de afinidade com o clássico de John Landis, suas expectativas podem ser extremamente altas.

Pule o blá blá blá e escute as músicas. Baixe logo a coletânea inteira do mês e defina o que você acha legal e o que é uma merda. Apesar da seleção sempre ter umas coisas muito boas, é bem provável que você não queira nunca mais ouvir algumas das músicas que estão aí. Mas, mesmo que não goste, se realmente quiser distância de alguma das músicas da MAP de julho, ao menos elas provocaram algo em você. Pra mim, a pior coisa que pode acontecer em relação à uma música é ela não lhe transmitir exatamente nada.

Mas agora, em 2009, acredite ou não, a banda lança um CD (seu terceiro) chamado Un Futuro Brillante. Pode ser pura ironia, mas neste lançamento eles se renovam com sons e instrumentos diferentes, incluindo sopros e sintetizadores Moog."

Brasil: Meio Desligado
Nancy – Keep Cooler Quando você compõe uma pequena pérola pop, corre o risco de causar, entre uma variada lista de sentimentos e sensações, euforia e espectativa nas pessoas. "Keep cooler", do Nancy, grupo que teoricamente é de Brasília mas têm (ou tinha) seus integrantes vivendo em diferentes cidades e países, é um belo exemplo. Singela, melódica e gostosa de ouvir, é uma canção tão boa que em um primeiro momento pode diminuir o restante do material apresentado pela banda em seu álbum de estreia, Chora, Matisse!, lançado no início de 2009 e composto majoritariamente (obs.: estranho usar essa palavra) através da internet, via emails e conversas de MSN (e similares, claro).

Canadá: I(Heart)Music
Rah Rah– I've Got Faith
"Quando tive que enviar minha indicação ao Polaris Music Prize (pense em uma versão canadense do prêmio britânico Mercury Prize), o primeiro álbum que me veio à mente foi o maravilhoso Going Steady do Rah Rah. Como ` I've Got Faith´ demonstra, a banda combina os melhores elementos do Broken Social Scene (com a sensação constante de que eles mal conseguem manter tudo unificado) e Arcade Fire (em seu caráter épico), alcançando um resultado com uma sonoridade própria."

Singer-songwriter Dringe Augh offers lovely songs full of lively guitar play. Over the years he has recorded several demos and his first official EP, Individually Wrapped, was released in June. On the new version of Tutelar, Dringe is accompanied by delightful female vocals from Eunjie Song of modern folk duo Sogyumo Acacia Band.

Chile: Super 45
Pedropiedra – Sol Mayor
Pedro Subercaseaux has been involved with music for almost a decade. Having explored such diverse styles as cumbia, hip-hop, electronica, pop and rock, he has been part of several projects such as Hermanos Brothers, Tropiflaite, Yaia and CHC, gathering a good amount of success along the way. This year Subercaseaux has decided to release his debut solo album, under the moniker Pedropiedra, in which he demonstrates his great ability to craft catchy pop-oriented melodies.

Dinamarca: All Scandinavian
The Works – Live And Direct (featuring Jams F. Kennedy)
It's time to bring some urban tunes to all ye faithful readers of the Music Alliance Pact. Enter The Works aka producers Twelve Beats and Terry Tester, whom I stumbled across quite recently and whose intriguing fusion of hip-hop and electronica I haven't been able to shake off since. Minimalist, yet rich on details. Hardly moving, but always taking you places. Their debut release, Yokohama EP, is out now and streamed in full on their MySpace.

Spanish Prisoners – Kiss The Lawn Goodbye
Brooklyn's Spanish Prisoners, fronted by Leo Maymind, create fractured power-pop in the vein of The New Porno's Dan Bejar (Destroyer). They're currently working on a new album but in the meantime they've released a free three-song EP - download it here - from which Kiss The Lawn Goodbye is taken.

Finlândia: Glue
Neufvoin – Robot
Neufvoin are an up-and-coming indie band who create beautifully-arranged catchy pop melodies with guitars, synthesizer textures and a few other instruments. Apparently, they also like playing with bots and droids. Robot is taken from their debut Robokop EP, six songs produced by Rubik frontman Artturi Taira that journey many different musical landscapes.

França: ZikNation
Jessica Fichot – Un, Deux, Trois (1,2,3)
Born in America to a French father and Chinese mother, chanteuse and songwriter Jessica Fichot was raised in France in a multicultural environment. She is a lot like her hometown of Paris: French at heart, but with a soul that's truly international. Her multi-ethnic upbringing colors the songs on her debut album.

ICELAND: I Love Icelandic Music
Sudden Weather Change – Prey Mode
Sudden Weather Change are a five-piece rock band from Reykjavik who have been compared to Sonic Youth and Pavement. Prey Mode is taken from their debut album, Stop! Handgrenade In The Name Of Crib-Death 'nderstand, which came out in April on the Icelandic Kimi Records label and will be released in Europe and America in September.

The Holy Roman Army – Elegy
Ireland has already produced its fair share of amazing records so far this year and we can now add The Holy Roman Army's album to that list. How The Light Gets In is the brother and sister duo's debut and it's filled with ambient and electronic flourishes with an organic heart. Perhaps it's not a surprise they are a doctor and a psychologist respectively. Elegy is a perfect example of the band's yearning for something emotional between the city's streets.

ITALY: Polaroid
Iori's Eyes – Anchor
Iori's Eyes are a boy and a girl from Milan who play gentle pop with a dreamy touch. Their music brings together a folk mood and a post-rock background. Their songs sound as fragile and delicate as little toys, but definitely know how to be surprising and poignant. Iori's Eyes just released their debut EP, And Everything Fits In The Yellow Whale, and I can't wait to listen to a proper album.

JAPAN: JPOP Lover
LITE – Ghost Dance
LITE are a Tokyo-based instrumental band who play experimental rock with striking, groove-heavy basslines. Formed in 2003, their spirit is similar to Mogwai, 65daysofstatic, Battles, Toe and Envy. In May, LITE visited America for the first time, going out on tour with legendary bass guitarist Mike Watt.

MEXICO: Club Fonograma
Hello Seahorse! – Universo 2
Hello Seahorse! is the year's most acclaimed Mexican indie band. With their third album, Bestia, the trio have made the transition into a multi-dimensional group with a masterwork under their belt. Bestia shines in between ghosts and hazy sonic beauty, in a universe of its own, and proves Hello Seahorse! have total control over their romanticized and passionate, sublime creations.

NEW ZEALAND: Counting The Beat
Urbantramper – Southern Hemisphere Blues
Urbantramper are a five-piece from Wellington who are part of a loose collective known as Treeninja. The band produce introspective pop songs that reflect an endearing, naive angst about their place in the world. This is a group with a manifesto! They're currently considering issues of music distribution, copyright and the impact of these on the nature of the relationship between musician and audience. Urbantramper have a strong back catalogue and a new album due in September.

NORWAY: Eardrums
Silverdrop – Real Life
It's July, it's summer and it's time for some fresh and shiny indie-pop from Norwegian six-piece Silverdrop. These are definitely sounds for the sunny days and the band's new recordings are even more bouncy and energetic than the songs I've heard from them before. Silverdrop are currently working on their debut album.

PERU: SoTB
Francois Peglau – Spring Lovers Song (Si Tú Quieres)
Francois Peglau's songs do not need much explanation, they just happen. They are simple and beautiful - they could be borne from a whistle on a bus or a nice sunny day with friends. Francois moved to London two years ago and Spring Lovers Song (Si Tú Quieres) is his most recent song.

PORTUGAL: Posso Ouvir Um Disco?
Andrew Thorn – ME Jane
Andrew Thorn is João Pedro Coimbra, a Portuguese composer/musician/producer and founder of the extremely successful duo Mesa. Andrew Thorn is João's way of exploring his creativity beyond Mesa's sound. The debut EP, Brutes On The Quiet, was released independently (Mesa is signed to Sony/BMG) on July 13 and ME Jane is the first authorized download by the artist and a MAP exclusive.

SINGAPORE: I'm Waking Up To...
Force Vomit – Liberator
Surfing and punk-rock in the city state of Singapore don't necessarily go hand in hand due to the lack of any noteworthy waves (both literally and metaphorically). Enter Force Vomit, the antithesis of Singapore's two shortcomings with their brazen brand of surf-punk that takes the piss out of Singapore's sanitized idiosyncrasies and semblance of normal life. Sounding like a Dick Dale number cut by switchblades, Liberator should easily find a place in a Tarantino film.

Suécia: Swedesplease
MAKTHAVERSKAN – German Boy
"Eu estava de bobeira na internet (principalmente pelo MySpace) e encontrei essa banda chamada MAKTHAVERSKAN. Desde então, descobri que fazem parte do selo Luxury. Considere essa a sua introdução a nova "A" banda de Gothenburg. Eles fazem um pop ágil misturado a pós-punk com um pouco da sonoridade de Joan Jett.

Venezuela: Barquisimeto Musical

Gonzalo Teppa is a musician, composer and a breathtaking double-bass player. Born in Barquisimeto, he has wowed audiences in Mexico, Brazil, Spain, USA, Colombia and Bolivia. Downbeat Magazine has selected him as solo artist of the year twice. De Conde A Principal is a version of an original work from Venezuelan composer Aldemaro Romero. It belongs to his latest work, ConTrabajos De Aldemaro.
